It looks like the former owner had these Wrangler graphics added and I'd like to remove them. I had some "Goof Off" around the house and tried it on one corner of the "r". Not only did it start removing the letter, but it also turned rag black where I rubbed it. Is it possible it was removing paint? If so, what should I use to remove these?

on a hot sunny day they peel off. some guys use a heat gun.

followed by a bit of acetone and a hot/soapy/water wash and rinse.

You can use Meguair's cutting compound and a felt wheel on a dremel. It will zip right off, and you'll just be polishing your paint while you do it.

You'll probably need about ten felt wheels to get all of that off, by the way.

Go buy a eraser wheel from a parts store put in on a drill . It removes decals but not the paint. They are about 40.00.

Not great advice so far here.

I own a sign shop and remove and install decals from boats and cars for a living.

If it is a vinyl decal and it is baked into the paint you are going to need plastic razor blades to remove it. A heat gun or hair dryer might work but you could end up bubbling your paint so be very careful there. If it is airbrushed on then you're going to have to sand it out and repaint. If it is a vinyl decal with clear coat over it you're going to have to sand off the clear coat, removal the decal and re clear coat the hood.
If you manage to get it off you are going to want to use mineral spirits to get the remaining residue off, alcohol won't do it and acetone is way too strong.
If you get it all off be prepared because if the paint around the decal is faded you will still be able to see where it was and may end up repainting anyway.

Can you post a very close up picture of the edge of the letters?

Good post! I own a sign shop as well and agree with the info.

The only problem is if the decal is under clear, good luck sanding it off and reclearing, without getting into the base.

And those plastic blades are a pain! :)

WD-40 "the miracle rub" worth a try?...

I ended up using an eraser wheel, GooGone, and alcohol. I removed all the decal but of course the paint underneath was a different color. I'm trying to find a new decal I like that might cover it well enough. Any suggestions?

Your Jeep looks black in the photos. What color is it actually? L.M.

The difference in color is called a Ghost Image. There is not much you can do for it if it's an older jeep. It's been baked there by the sun.

If it's not to bad you might try some rubbing compound and elbow grease. Good luck.

I saw one somewhere that said "boob shaker" I'd immagine you'll get some weird looks though. WR4NG13R maybe if your into military jeeps? Idk, do your own thing that's special to you and your jeep!
