Rubicon off road tires/wheels on Sport

Anyone buy someone's Rubicon tires/wheels and put them on their Sport? I know they're both 17 X 7 1/2, but was wondering about any rubbing. I know a lot of folks take their new rubi tires and wheels off immediately and sell them because they upgrade and I like how they look.

Welcome to the forum. This is very common. The tires and wheels are the same dimension/size/offset (for the Sport S vs.Rubicon). It will work fine.

The Sport (non-S) steel wheels and tires are smaller, but the Rubicon wheels/tires will still fit but you have to recalibrate the speedo.

There is no difference in the physical dimensions between the 2 oem tire/wheel packages, as stated earlier. Therefore you will not have to re-calibrate if you buy the Rubicon take-offs. Just bolt them on and enjoy.

If you have a non-S sport with smaller diameter tires just compare the diameters to figure out an approximate difference.

Rubicon stock BFG KM2 tires: 255/75-17

255 = section width (mm)
75 = profile (% of section width)
17 = wheel diameter (inches)

Theoretical tire diameter = wheel diameter + 2x profile
Profile or sidewall height = profile (75%) x section width (255mm) = 191.25 mm

25.4 mm = 1 inch

191.25 / 25.4 = 7.53"

17 + 2x7.53 = 32.06" BFG KM2 255/75-17

Do the same math with your stock tire size and then divide the two diameters to get a percentage.

If you have the really small stock size 225/75-16

16+2x(0.75x225/25.4) = 29.3"

32.06/29.3 = 1.095

That would indicate close to a 9% difference in speed and mileage, or you'd be going 60mph when your speedo says 55mph.

I can confirm that the 5MPH difference is accurate. I went from the stock steel sport wheels to Rubicon (Willy's) wheels and it read about 5mph slower on the interstate. Also can tell you safely there is no rubbing or any fitment issues.

The dealer can flash anywhere between 29" and 32" for your wheel diameter to correct your speedo and shift points (that's what they told me). Anything >33" you're on your own and have to procal.

I believe he has the sport s with the 17" wheel though, not the 16" steel wheels.

Going to get that calibrated? Cause you're odo is not logging as many miles as it should right now. Good way to cheat the mileage I guess but not great for the next owner.

I do have 17 inches on mine now, so getting the rubi take offs I guess no adjustment needed. Now I just have to convince the wife/boss that buying 5 new tires/wheels is a good idea.

Aren't the Sport S wheels very similar to the Rubicon wheels? I think they are identical to previous year model Rubicon wheels, right? In that case you can probably sell the sport S wheels and tires for nearly what you will pay for Rubicon take offs.

I bought a set of Sahara take offs for my Non-S sport before I had owned it for a week for $400. Then yesterday I sold my own 16" take offs for $300. You can.Probably do.something similar if you are shrewd.

Personally I wouldn't bother. Not sure there is much about the Rubicon wheels that are an improvement over the Sport S.

I did get it fixed, I have a Bullydog GT programmer

(I also turned TPMS off so I didnt have to buy sensors lol)

No adjustment needed going from stock 17 to 17 or even stock 18 (Sahara) to stock 17 Rubicon, for example.

I think the wheels you are referring to are the "Moab" s and my understanding is they used to come on pre-2012 Rubis, then when the new wheel emerged they went to the Sport S or B depending on where you live.

The market for this rim depends on location but for example in Ontario Canada I picked up 5 from the local buy and sell and paid $150 for rims only. They weren't great condition but I dipped them and they looked like new

Thanks for the clarification. I wondered when they switched. I actually prefer these wheels in appearance over the current (2015) Rubicon/Willys wheel. I just didn't want to pay the enormous premium to get them on my new Jeep.

I agree about the new Rubi rims.. Not a fan.

If you can't find a used set of Moabs for a good price, you can get a set from Quadratec if you wanted.
