Hey all,
I am looking into modifications and what nots for our new JLU sport.
I have been looking at 2.5" lift options and 35" tires as this seems pretty common first mods. My concern is how does the stock drive train hold up to turning the larger tires?

Would 33s be a better option for reliability without upgrading axles and gears?

This is my wife's daily M-F but we use it as a Jeep on the weekends. Usually just trail riding and potential for mud.

Thanks
Dan

I went 33s this time on my JLU sport. Did 35s on my 16 JKU and it wasn’t great. But the 3.21 gears were even horrible with the stock 31s. The JLU stock 3.45 gears with the 8 spd turns my 33s pretty damn good. 35s can be. Game changer. Be interesting to see what people say about gearing on the JLU

Yea we don't do much in the way of Rock Crawling down here in FL,
but right now for my family the Jeep is big fun and it needs to stay that way. Once you start breaking it becomes less fun LOL and expensive

I think you will be happy with 35s then. A lot of people I’ve talked to, mostly in FL, have 35 MTs and said they barely feel power loss. MAke sure you program it for the new tire size.
Off-road is another story, when you need to crawl an don’t want to throttle.. it’s really needed on rocks.. less skinny pedal, the better. Can’t wait to see what you do!

The D30/D35 axles in the JL Sport share tubes with the D44s I think. The guy that does the Dynatrac aftermarket axles said that strength wise, the tubes are all the same. Internally they are different of course, but the Sport axles are upgraded on JLs and are plenty strong enough for 35s if you aren't rock crawling.

It should say it on your window sticker, and hope so. Mine is an 18 and that was included in that option. I

The housing is reasonably stout. The weak point on a D30 & D35 that worries me is the dinky little ring and pinion. Not going lower than stock gearing helps due to the larger pinion, but you can still shear teeth off the ring gear.

33's should be fine for the most part. 35's starts pushing it. But it will be ok right up until it's not. Depends on your use and your predisposition for breaking things.
