Hello fellow Jeepers,

I own a 2005 Jeep Wrangler 4.0. I am having issues now starting my Jeep after leaving the battery disconnected overnight. I was hoping to reset the ECM after changing the TPS, IACV, and fuel injectors. Now when I try to start it, it clicks and the gauges bounce all over the place and acts like the battery is dead. If I disconnect the neg and pos cables and reconnect it starts right up.

I am stumped as to what’s going on.

Did you then go for a drive, say for 20min or more, giving your Jeep a good time to reset everything? I had a similar experience in the past and things didn't appear normal until the Jeep was driven for awhile. I'm assuming you have no "check engine" lamp with codes.

@Andy0088 What codes are symptoms are you having? The most common failures on 05-06 are hard shift from 1st to 2nd when cold, o2 sensors showing bad when good, high transmission temperatures and 1600 codes. Check and clean all powers and grounds as well.

No check engine light. It was fine for over a week and I just went outside this morning to start it and it’s doing the same as before.

I'd check the charge on the battery, it sounds like it's charge is marginal. Or place it on a bench-top charger overnight... not just a couple hours. Trickle chargers won't do it in a reasonable amount of time if the charge is low..

I drove it for over a week and it was fine with no issues. Would a bad battery cause all the cluster gauges to bounce when you try to start it? I guess I’ll have the battery tested today. All the cables and grounds are good.

A poor battery will cause issues, the ECM must see the correct voltage in order to work correctly.
I got the battery tested and everything checked out. I got home and installed the battery, connected the cables and it fired up. I turned it off and try to start it and it wouldn’t. It clicked and all the gauges bounce and you can here the starter relay clicking. It will not turn over or anything, it acts like it’s dead. It has to be an ECM issue.

If you installed the colored felt "corrosion prevention" rings, take them off and re-seat the cables. I found they caused issues for me. As well as caused the same type of behavior.

Make REALLY sure that the posts are clean, and there is no corrosion on any of the cables.
