I don't worry because I drive a raggedy old YJ.

Somebody broke into my apartment.
Didn't take none of my stuff.
They just left a twenty on the kitchen table with a note ...'man, you need this worse than I do'

After ten years in LE I can tell you from experience that locks only keep honest people out. If someone wants to steal something out of your jeep they will do it. As someone said earlier try to park in front of a camera if possible and put in lock boxes. Most theives look for targets of opportunity and dont want to take a lot of time.

I am a LEO as well. I haven't had a top on my jeep in 5 years. I had a tow strap stolen last year. About 6 years ago I had the top on it an the dumb ass thief punched the soft window and opened my door to steal my radio. The door was unlocked to begin with. The thief took the radio but not the sleeve or harness. The radio was an eclipse which is useless without the correct cd to unlock it after a power disconnect. I had a 99% hunch of who did it based upon the music selection they left behind as well as their industry specific tools. I took a walk and asked for it back and the guy foot bailed. Made me laugh pretty good. In the end it was annoying but not the end of the world.

Moral of the story is don't give anyone a reason to look. I rarely drive my jeep but I make sure I take the garage door opener, radio face plate, etc... With me.

im sure i wont have any issues being that i live in a small town, but thanks for the tips. quick question, does a 2003 tj come stock with an alarm system? not sure if mine does, or is supposed to (i think i read they do somewere)

I don't have any qualms about parking at work with the top off. I work at O'Hare.

When I have the top off, nothing is left out in the open for them to steal, it either goes with me, or is locked up in the console.

I have been too nervous to leave my top off while I'm at work, too. I work nights in a downtown area of a decent sized city with decent sized crime. I don't leave anything in it, but I don't want to risk having anyone mess with it in their attempt to take parts or steal the entire thing.

You could always put an alarm on it

How safe is parking a Jeep without a top?

You biggest worry, from experience, is

birds shitting all over your seats and steering wheels.

So, my simple advice is as follows: fold your seats forward so the poop hits the seat backs instead; keep valuables out of sight; and if you are worried about parking it in a bad neighborhood, then a short piece of chain thru the steering wheel and around the roll bars with a big padlock will deter most theifs, whom are opportunists.

LoL good advice, seats forward and the chain is priceless :)

Depends where you live. If you park topless overnight in San Francisco, I guarantee you'll return to a bum sleeping in your car.
Yeah, I have to shell out for the parking garage every time I'm up there. They'll even leave you a brown one for good luck.

Haha. The only plus is you don't have to worry about your windows getting broken if you don't have a top on your car, which sadly happens way too frequently out here.

Yeah, I really need to get some better stuff to bolt my sub /amp down with. However, 99% of the time it's at work or in my parking garage. Since it's obvious to anyone that I never run with a top, I'm inclined to believe they assume there isn't jack for them to steal in it. I only take the deck faceplate with me. I suppose they could steal my climbing harness and some other random camping junk that I may leave in there... but if that's all that gets jacked on the order of every 1-3 years, I'll pay that price to run it the way I want.

So, I just solved my problem to the above, since I have my hi-lift laying over the sub in the back behind the cage, I'll just padlock that down on both sides with some chain to the cage -- sweet! And then my chain won't take up all the room left in the back!!

Noog7, noticed the E9X M3 in your signature. Do you have a Jeep and an M3? I just sold my E92 M3 because I wasn't getting much use out of it living in SF. I think that's the perfect combo of cars though if you have space for both.

'05 TJ Rubicon 6spd (50k mi) and '10 E90 M3 w/ DCT (37k mi). Perfect combo for off-road and track. I live in San Jose and daily drive the jeep.

I might sell the M3 as I'll get the best value out of the sale right now (no 4-doors available) and determine whether I want to pick up the same thing again or the new 4-door when it comes out. Not a fan of the look of the coupes.

I keep my faceplate locked away in the center console, I take the CB out when I'm not on the trail. My highlift is bolted to my roll bar and locked with a padlock, I have a cheapie socket and wrench set tucked under the seat. I bolted an ammo can in the rear corner of the trunk, I put a bolt with the threads facing out thru the front of the can, I have a nylock nut threaded on and a small flat wrench hidden in the jeep. It not a padlock, but you need the wrench to remove it, I keep my straps and better tools in the ammo can.

If it would kill me to lose it, I don't carry it! Thankfully, most people pass up a crappy jeep, especially when they can plainly see there isn't much to take. Thieves suck!
