I hear a clunking noise in the rear... sounds like possibly the tail gate but the dealer and I can't find the problem... any suggestions?

I only hear it at very slow speeds.. more like a thunk

Over bumps?
Up to what speed can you hear it?
Put about three wraps of electrical tape around the latch hoop of the tailgate, if it's the tailgate that should temporarily fix it.

Ironically, thats where i think its coming from... the electrical take is a great idea...

The speeds, maybe a fast walking speed..5-7mph?

Tested with the jack and tools out...knock thunk still present

Is the sound consistent or occasional? Meaning, if ur driving slow it's constant and you can always hear it or related to a bump?

Constant... not really bump related... like body flex

I have the same issue with mine as well. I notice when going about 10-15 miles an hour through parking lots and bumps. Sounds like a creeking and knocking sound like something under the body in the rear end. I checked my jack put my hands against the hard top and rocked the body as well as pushing up and down on each corner of the bumper and hear nothing. I also wiggled the exhaust around and still nothing. I have an appt to drop mine off the end of this coming week to have them look at mine. Not sure if its the tail gate or maybe a bushing. It doesnt sound like a serious issue but its damn sure an annoying one. It also isnt loud like a muffled sound which is why I think its something under the body in the rear and not something inside the vehicle. I am leaving for a road trip to Utah in a month so wanted mine to be looked at to hopefully figure it out or at least rule any small problem that can become a big one driving to Utah and then back to MN

Check & torque:
Upper & Lower Control Arms
Trackbar Mounts
Swaybar brackets Mounts
Check upper mounts on shocks.
Remove shocks from lower mounts. See if the ears are too wide. If so, bang them closer together, reinstall shocks. (Took me a while to find this on mine).

If tinny sounding, check the heatsheild above the muffler.

Check to make sure the rubber bumper is still present on the tailgate alignment bracket. If that isn't there, the tailgate may not be held tight and will clunk from time to time... Mine did.

Make sure the there is no play with the gate. Lift up and down on the end of gate while open - a loose hinge will show itself here.

Look on Part Number 14. There is a rubber bumper there.

Also, make sure all your brackets are tight. Look for abnormal wear on part 14, 12, and 10.

Does this look correct??

Easy with those bolts on the door guide, snapped one off by overtightening.

I'd get the kachunk sound out but then something moved and it came back, so I was tightening to stop the movement.

I eventually got my tailgate tight as brand new. Accidentlly bumped someone real lightly in a parking lot and insurance replaced my tailgate. I was about to buy a teraflex hinge, so costs were about the same :)

...I would imagine you have already checked this, but your spare isn't loose is it? When working on my LED brake light I reinstalled my spare but apparently didn't tighten the lugs quite enough...a few miles down the road I heard a knocking/rattle....a few more foot pounds on the lugs and all was good again...

Yes tightened to 55lbs and its solid

I had an oversized tire "35 with aftermarket wheel that fit fine on my tire rack. When I hit a bump it would make noise no matter how tight the spare was. I replaced the hinges and tire rack with an aftermarket one made for large tires that is beefier and makes contact with the door in more areas. Anyway the clunk/think/rattle is gone. I think it was the old hinges and door flexing under the extra weight.

Soft Top / Hard Top?

My Soft Top makes noise until I put the top down and secure the folded roof with bungee cords.

I have this same issue, but it's more noticeable when I'm going in reverse at slow speeds. My brother-in-law said it's possibly the latch to the tailgate not seating correctly and said to unbolt the catch latch on the tub and move it more forward. Haven't tried this yet so I can't say it will work but he had a 2010 JK and is a mechanic.

I drove from FL to UT and had a packed Jeep. Didn't really hear the noise going down the road and only a little bit when doing a trail or two.

Ok its Definitely here, look at the scratch top and bottom!! so what's the adjustment and fix??

EDIT: dont worry about the scratches on that metal plate, they are normal. its just the metal plate centering the tailgate where it needs to be. adjusting it will tighten up the whole tailgate

try loosening up the plate in the last picture, then moving it towards the rear of the jeep about 1/16" to 1/8" and up slightly. this will tighten up the whole tailgate and hopefully eliminate the clunking.

i had the same issue and this is what resolved it.

question...do you have an aftermarket bumper, or an AEV tire carrier. I had a clunk/thump/rattle in the rear of both of mine. couldn't find it for nothing, I had taped up the door catch, adjusted the latch and all the other fixes thinking it was the tailgate. On one, it was the aftermarket bumper not being properly shimmed away from the frame. At slow speeds going over the slightest bump or not, the bumper would rub the back pinch seam and produce the sound. After shimming it out...no sound. On my other, the one with the AEV carrier, the turnbuckle had rusted through and even though the mount was solid, the broken turnbuckle was causing the sound.
