I contacted my dealer, and explained my problem. The service adviser that I have had since I bought the Jeep said, He should be able to get the axel covered under my lifetime warranty can you bring it in today. I almost fell off my chair! They have gone above and beyond the call of duty several times for me and I'm very thankful. I thought I owned this one and was dreading the process. So I should know what they intend to do later today, but I was shocked they offered that solution. I swear that Max Care Lifetime warranty I bought has paid for it's self 4x over!!

As hybrid3.0 suggested, your lug stud has broken free, the splines that are supposed to keep it in place have stripped. Problem is, you probably can't reach the backside of the stud to keep it from spinning, as it will be covered by the brake rotor, and you can't remove the brake rotor, as it's held in place by the lug nut you can't get off...

I'm guessing you have to drill the stud out though a socket held in place by wrench (so the stud+lug combo will not spin while drilling).

Not easy, but doable with proper drill, drillbit and cutting oil.
Just get a metal saw or grinder and cut the lug nut off and replace the stud and the lug nut

As I understood the situation, its not that simple: the wheel is stuck on, bolt is recesssed in the bolt hole. No room for grinder or saw, unless you wanna sacrifice the wheel. Anyways, dealer promised to take care of this predicament.

Oh my god this is a nightmare... I removed my girlfriends in the parking lot of a discount tire. 2011 Prius front driver side. Three studs broke off, one stud was spinning freely in the hub and only one was still holding on. Needless to say it cant be driven with a single lug gabbing on. The lug was recessed so it cant be cut or ground off and obviously you cant take the wheel off. Here was the solution I came up with after may other failed attempts

1.Take a lug nut to a local hardware store and fit it to one of those cheap spark plug wrenches
4502041

2. Slide the spark plug wrench over the spinning lug, measure and cut it off with enough protruding from the wheel recess that it can be held onto with a box end wrench.
3. Now hold the cut off screwdriver wrench over the spinning lug with a box end wrench and start drilling, this will take a while but you'll get there

I did this in a Discount Tire parking lot with a generator and plug in angle grinder and drill. Have extra drill bits on ya. It was horrible but I hope my post helps someone

I am lucky to have a really good dealer, alway fair and works hard to get things covered by my Max Care warranty. All fixed and $100 bill, best 100 I've spent in a quite a while!! A new axel did the trick, still do not know what led to the stud spinning......

I don’t either but suspect that it was overtightened with an impact gun

Even possible someone was attempting to loosen but had impact on tighten hammering away at full force not understanding why it was not coming off

Just a guess

I was putting my right rear wheel on my 2012 Rubicon Unlimited back on after a brake job. One of the lug nuts would not tighten, only spin after initially starting but could not tighten down. I then tried to remove it and the same, partially removed, then spin, could not remove it. I tried needle nose pliers, no luck, hook tool trying to pull as I was turning lug nut to loosen, no luck.

I truly am lost one. Some help is really appreciated!!

Thank you!
Seems like a nut splitting tool might work.

I had the same issue on my 2012. What caused my was that the dealership had slightly cross threaded two of my lugs, likely using an impact gun on the heavy 37’s without the wheel fully centered. One of the cross threaded lug nut just stripped out the wheel stud threads mid shaft. A second one fortunately just broke the wheel stud in two before the threads stripped. For the spinning lug I used a large drill bit to drill between the lug nut and the inside pocket of the wheel socket. It scratched the shit out of it but I have a center cap cover on my wheels so I didn’t care. Took about 30 minutes of drilling before the deep lug nut cap cracked and fell off the stud. Glad you didn’t have to go through the pain but it can happen again. I keep a breaker bar and extra wheel studs on hand.
